Cold water therapy is more than a trend. For many, it’s a powerful way to reconnect with the body, reset the nervous system, and build resilience — physically and emotionally.
At Lochar Mill Riverside Retreat, our cold water experience isn’t extreme or competitive. It’s supportive, guided, and done at your own pace. But how do you know if it’s right for you?
What Is Cold Water Therapy?
Cold water therapy involves immersing the body in cold water — usually between 5°C and 15°C — for short, controlled sessions. Even just 1–3 minutes of exposure can trigger a wide range of physiological benefits.
What are the potential benefits of cold water therapy
Improved mood: Cold immersion triggers a release of dopamine and endorphins — helping you feel energised and uplifted.
Reduced inflammation: Cold constricts blood vessels, helping reduce swelling and soothe inflamed joints or muscles.
Nervous system reset: Regular cold exposure may help regulate the vagus nerve, improving your stress response and emotional resilience.
Stronger immunity: Some research suggests cold water therapy can enhance immune function over time.
Is It Safe for Everyone?
Cold water therapy is not suitable for everyone. You should avoid it (or consult your GP first) if you have:
Heart conditions (angina, recent heart attack)
Very high blood pressure
Raynaud’s disease
Cold urticaria (cold allergy)
Uncontrolled seizures
Both Alan and Lucy are Cold Water Therapy Practitioners so we guide you through the process safely. You’ll start with breathwork and body awareness. Our cold pod is private and safe — and the emphasis is always on listening to your body.
Many guests follow their dip with time in our infrared sauna and a hot drink in the Hygge Hut — a full-circle experience of resilience and rest.
